Social Action CommitteeSocial Action Committee Description:
The Social Action Committee (SAC) engages in projects that facilitate
social activism in research, the classroom, and other professional
areas. The Chair of the SAC is elected by the membership in odd
numbered years, and is a two-year commitment. Since 2002, SAC
produces up to 4 fact sheets per year (published in Network News
quarterly, then posted on the SWS website), and has initiated the
Undergraduate Activism Award (now housed under Awards
Committee). SAC is supportive of securing union friendly hotels for
conferences, fair-trade coffee, child care at meetings, providing quiet
spaces for breastfeeding, and the like at SWS meetings. The role of
the committee is driven mostly by membership concern. In addition to
overseeing the production of fact sheets, the SAC chair organizes
meetings, provides agendas, and addresses issues brought to SAC
by the membership.

FACT SHEETS:
SAC initiated fact sheets in 2002 to provide the latest information on
current women ’ s issues to educators and community agencies and
organizations. The committee has been involved in selecting topics,
soliciting authors, and facilitating the distribution of fact sheets once
completed, they work one year ahead of the calendar year, so in
2008 they are both producing/publishing 2008 fact sheets, while also
selecting topics, soliciting and selecting submitted proposals for 2009.
Twenty-one fact sheets have been produced between 2002 and
2008. Once completed, they appear in Network News and are placed
on the SWS website.
UNDERGRADUATE ACTIVISM SCHOLARSHIP:
In 2003 SAC began an undergraduate scholarship program to select
up to three student activists who have engaged in internships or
faculty projects to promote the status of women. Awards are $750 per
student and recipients are encouraged to use the funding to attend
the upcoming winter meeting. This scholarship program was
transferred to the Awards Committee, so please consult for more
information.
