Publications Committee

Duties:
The publications committee is charged with oversight of all SWS publications, in terms of both process and final products. This means that this committee takes responsibility for everything from budgets to staffing to distribution. Specifically, the list of duties for which members of the Publications Committee are responsible include (but are not limited to):

  • Negotiating and approving a contract for the SWS journal, Gender & Society, with a publisher. While Publications is responsible for this process, the role may involve chairing, partially staffing, but most of all appointing and convening a subcommittee to accomplish this task.

  • The search and selection process for the editor for Gender & Society Again, while Publications is responsible for this process, the role may involve chairing, partially staffing, but most of all appointing and convening a subcommittee to accomplish this task.

  • Based on the editor ’s recommendation, selecting editorial members for Gender & Society; thanking editorial board members completing their terms (annually).

  • Reviewing requests and dis/approving special issues for Gender & Society.

  • Reviewing and dis/approving the budget for Gender & Society (annually); this includes reviewing and dis/approving the budget for the Book Review editor of Gender & Society, which is under the purview of the Gender & Society office.

  • Devising contracts for the editors of Gender & Society, Network News, and the Book Review editor of Gender & Society.

  • Reviewing old/setting new policies for Gender & Society.

  • The search and selection process for the Book Review editor for Gender & Society.

  • The search and selection process for the editor of Network News.

  • Reviewing and dis/approving the budget for Network News (bi-annually).

  • Provide oversight to the editorial offices of Gender & Society and Network News. This includes reviewing reports submitted by these offices concerning the progress of these publications (e.g., how many manuscripts are submitted to Gender & Society, how they are managed, the timely publication of articles, how book reviews are managed and published, etc.; how often Network News is published and when; etc.) (bi-annually).

  • Overseeing Fact Sheets, in terms of giving permission to reprint, etc.

  • Responding to various inquiries concerning permissions to use or edit material appearing in to the journal as well as other SWS publications.
Committee expectations:
All members of SWS committees are expected to regularly attend meetings. Given the scope and level of responsibility of the publications committee, the expectation concerning meeting attendance at both the annual and midyear meetings is especially important. Agreeing to serve on this committee constitutes an understanding of and agreement with this expectation. In addition, committee co-chairs are elected from the membership of this committee, based on cohort membership (two persons from the general SWS membership are elected per year); thus committee members realize that in agreeing to serve on this committee, they have a good likelihood of serving as co-chair, overseeing the above activities. The ideal candidate/committee member would have considerable experience in journal publishing and/or have been a member of a journal's editorial board.

Chair Expectations:
In addition to overseeing all of the activities listed above, the co-chairs are responsible for running the bi-annual meetings, including setting agendas and filing and presenting reports to the business meeting; co-chairs are also the ones to respond to various permissions requests and the like. In addition, co-chairs run all searches. Perhaps most importantly, co-chairs will be responsible for negotiating contracts with publishers for Gender & Society, the publication that represents the financial basis for the continued viability of SWS. The Publications Committee co-chair also serves on the committee that provides oversight to the Executive Officer.
