SWS is a non-governmental organization member of the United Nations. We have seven representatives. Two SWS members serve as representatives to the Department of Public Information and five serve as representatives to the Economic and Social Council and representatives to the annual meetings of the Commission on the Status of Women Status of Women (CSW).
The International Committee will be selecting more UN representatives and delineating their duties to SWS. A report and slide show on SWS participation in the 2009 Commission on the Status of Women are available here: Report [doc] and Slide Show [PowerPoint].
Call for SWS UN Representatives to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
International Collaborations
SWS is establishing collaborations with feminist and women-centered organizations and non-governmental organizations across the globe. The IC is currently establishing a sub-committee to systemize a process of defining what these international collaborations will provide and of how to nominate and select organizations.
World Social Forum
SWS has established a relationship with the World Social Forum process for the last four years and has participated in the First Social Forum of the Americas, Quito, 2004, the Polycentric Social Forum, Caracas, Venezuela, 2006, and the 7th World Social Forum, Nairobi, Kenya, 2007, and the first United States Social Forum (USSF), Atlanta, Georgia 2007. SWS members attended and organized the event, "Revolutionizing Women´s Consciousness", at the WSF in Nairobi, Kenya and three events at the USSF. Future plans for SWS participation in the WSF is to send a delegation to the 9th WSF to be held in Belem, Brazil, the last week of January 2009.
International Sociology Association, RC 32
Many members of SWS and our IC committee are also involved in the International Sociology Association and are members of Research Committee 32, Women in Society. The IC would like to foster greater involvement by SWS in RC 32 and many of us will be participating in the First ISA Forum of Sociology in Barcelona, Spain, September, 2008.
