Fact Sheets

The purpose of SWS Fact Sheets is to aid people in the streets and trenches of our communities who are working for social justice. They can also be an invaluable tool for teachers. Fact Sheets are developed by SWS members who receive an honorarium from our Social Action Committee.

Call for Proposals

Social Action Fact Sheets 2014
Proposals due:   June 1, 2013

The Social Action Committee of Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS) invites proposals for fact sheets on the following topics (broadly defined):
•    Gender and unemployment;
•    Gender, sexualities, human rights/CEDAW;
•    An “open” category (e.g., gender and social movements, disabilities, transnational feminism, social justice in the military)
Proposals from graduate students and junior faculty -- and authors of books on related topics! -- are especially welcome!  Fact sheets will be distributed to SWS members quarterly via the Network News in 2014 and will be made available on the SWS website.   The timeframe for completion and publication of the fact sheets will be negotiated upon acceptance of proposals.  SWS offers an honorarium of $750 for finalized fact sheets.
Fact sheets are intended to be useful sources of information for teaching, social action, and other occasions where succinct, accessible information is needed. To that end, it is important that facts sheets not only be informative, but also concise (2-4 pages), clearly written, and well-organized. We will provide you with additional guidance if your proposal is accepted but basically, fact sheets typically include: current data (drawn from credible organizations and agencies, possibly reported in tables); key organizations; sources of additional information; suggested readings and other resources; teaching applications.

Proposals are due June 1, 2013.  Proposals are 1-2 page memos that include: the topic to be addressed; the content to be included and some idea of the organization; and a brief statement of the author’s background/expertise with regard to the proposed topic.
Email proposals to: Kylie Parrotta (kylie.parrotta@gmail.com) and Crystal Jackson (cajackso@unlv.nevada.edu)  (Co-Chairs, SWS Social Action Committee). Please put “SWS Fact Sheet: [TOPIC]” in the subject heading; you will be sent a confirmation of receipt for each submission.

Thank you!  We look forward to your proposals!
